Stitch Glossary

 

Stitch Glossary of abbreviations used in my patterns:

(Less common abbreviations include name of pattern in parentheses).

Alternate Cable CO: place slip knot on left needle; insert right needle into slip knot and knit one st. Without twisting, place this stitch on left needle.    * With yarn in front, insert right needle between first and second st on left needle from back to front, purl one st, and place on left needle without twisting; insert right needle between first and second st on left needle, knit one st, and place on left needle without twisting. Rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle, including the slip knot.

Applied I-cord: pick up and knit required number of st along edge where I-cord is to be applied. With RS facing, CO 3 using cable CO method; * K2, SSK, slip these 3 st back to left needle, rep from * until all st have been worked and 3 live st remain. Slide 3 worked stitches remaining on right needle to other end of same needle; K1, SSK, pass first st over second as in regular bind off. Cut yarn and pull through last stitch.

B: bead – knit stitch to be beaded – skewer bead with crochet hook, and insert hook through middle of st. Using hook, slide st off needle and pull it through the bead. Replace newly beaded st on right needle. See video tutorial at www.jenniferdassau.com/support/tutorials/

Backwards Loop CO: with working yarn, make backwards loop over thumb and place on right needle.

Beaded Longtail CO: with prestrung beads on tail end of yarn, use Longtail method to CO as per pattern. (Arachnophilia, Hoopla)

BO: bind off.

BO purlwise: bind off using purl stitches.

Cable CO: place slip knot on left needle; insert right needle into slip knot and knit one st. Without twisting, place this stitch on left needle. * Insert right needle between first and second st on left needle, knit one st, and place on left needle without twisting. Rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle, including the slip knot.

C4F: cable 4 front – slip 2 st to cable needle and hold to front of work, * K1, P1 * next 2 st, then * K1, P1 * 2 st from cable needle. (Azul)

C8B: cable 8 back – slip 4 st to cable needle and hold to back of work, K4, then K4 from cable needle. (Alluvium)

C8F: cable 8 front – slip 4 st to cable needle and hold to front of work, K4, then K4 from cable needle. (Alluvium)

C8F: cable 8 front – slip 4 st to cable needle and hold to front of work, * K1, P1 * next 4 st, then * K1, P1 * 4 st from cable needle. (Azul)

C12B: cable 12 Back – slip 6 st to cable needle and hold to back of work, * K1, P1 * next 6 st, then * K1, P1 * 6 st from cable needle. (Laura Mitts)

C12F: cable 12 Front – slip 6 st to cable needle and hold to front of work, * K1, P1 * next 6 st, then * K1, P1 * 6 st from cable needle. (Laura Mitts, Laura, Azul)

CC: contrast color.

CO: cast on.

CDD: centered double decrease – slip the next 2 st on the left needle together as if to knit; knit the next st on left needle, then pass the 2 slipped st over this stitch; see also S2KP.

CDI: Centered Double Increase – knit into the back then the front of next st, leaving st on right needle. insert left needle through st below from back to front, and knit it through the back loop. 2 stitches increased. See tutorial. (Iznik)

Cluster 3: slip 3 st wyb, move yarn to font, slip 3 st back to left needle, move yarn to back, K3. (Iznik)

Decr 5: slip first, second & third st on left needle separately to right needle, wyb. * pass second st on right needle over last slipped st, and move resulting st to left needle. Pass second st on left needle over first st on left needle, * sl1wyb. Repeat from * once, then K1. 4 st dec’d. See video tutorial at www.jenniferdassau.com (Iznik)

DS: double st on a knit row (German short rows) – yf between needles, sl1, yb over needle.

DS: double st on a purl row (German short rows) – sl1, yb over needle, yf between needles.

drop stitch: drop st off needle and allow to ravel. Stitches may be raveled at any time after dropping. (ArachnoMania)

Grafting Stockinette (Kitchener Stitch): Divide stitches onto two spare needles. Hold work with WS facing together, and needles parallel with final row of stitches in front, and CO stitches behind; working yarn is coming from right end of back needle. Graft all st using yarn tail as follows: Setup: Insert needle through first st on front needle purlwise, then through first st on back needle knitwise. Front needle: insert needle through first st knitwise and drop it off needle, then through next st purlwise, leaving it on needle. Back needle: insert needle through first st purlwise and drop it off needle, then through next st knitwise, leaving it on needle. Repeat front and back needle steps until all st are grafted.

K: knit.

Kb&f: knit back & front – knit into the back, then the front of next st – used in CDI. (Iznik)

Kf&b: knit front & back – knit into the front and back of next st.

Kfb&f: knit front, back & front – knit into the front, back and front again of next st.

KfPb: knit into the front, then purl into the back of next st.

Ktbl: insert right needle through back loop of next st on left needle, and knit.

Ktbl-B: knit st through the back loop (Ktbl, as above), and then Bead that stitch as follows: skewer bead with crochet hook, and insert hook through middle of stitch. Using hook, slide stitch off needle and pull it through the bead. Replace newly beaded stitch on right needle. (ArachnoMania)

K1-B: knit the next st and then bead it. (Venomous Tentacula)

K1b: knit into the st below the next st on left needle; pull yarn through, allowing st on left needle to drop down and form a double loop behind the new stitch.

K2tog: knit 2 together – knit the next 2 st together as one.

K2togtbl: knit the next 2 st together through the back loop.

K3tog: knit 3 together – knit the next 3 st together as one.

K3togtbl: knit the next 3 st together through the back loop.

LLI: left lifted increase – insert left needle tip from back to front into st 2 stitches below the st just knit on right needle, and knit it through the back loop.

LLI-P: left lifted increase, purl – insert left needle tip from front to back into st 2 stitches below the st just purled on right needle, and purl.

LP: left pleat – (worked over x st) – place next y st on dpn 1, then following y st on dpn 2; with dpn 1 held in front, fold dpn 2 clockwise behind with WS facing, then hold both dpns in front of left needle: K3tog (1 st from 1st dpn, 1 st from 2nd dpn and 1 st from left needle) y times.

M1: make 1 (backwards loop thumb method) – wrap working yarn around your thumb from back to front, insert right needle from below through the thumb loop, remove thumb and pull firmly.

M1: make 1 – insert left needle from back to front under strand between st, and knit it.

M1L: make 1 left – insert left needle from front to back under strand between st, and knit it through the back loop.

M1L-P: make 1 left, purl – insert left needle from front to back under strand between st, and purl it through the back loop.

M1R: make 1 right – insert left needle from back to front under strand between st, and knit it.

M1R-P: make 1 right, purl – insert left needle from back to front under strand between st, and purl it.

MB: make buttonhole – slip 1 st knitwise, move yarn to front and drop it, * slip next st knitwise and pass first slipped st over second slipped st and off needle. Rep from * once. Slip last st on right needle back to left needle. Turn work, and move yarn to front; CO 3 using twisted purlwise cast on. Turn work. Slip first st on left needle to right needle, and slip last CO st over this stitch. Then slip this stitch onto left needle. MBbl: make bobble – knit into front, back and front of next stitch, turn, P3, turn, K3, turn, P3, S2KP.

MC: main color.

MegaCable15: slip 8 st to cable needle and hold in back; K3, P1, K3, then P1, K3, P1, K3 from cable needle. (Chic Mega Cowl)

P: purl.

pb: place bead – slide bead up yarn tail against last st knit. (Arachnophilia, Hoopla)

pBso: pass beaded stitch over – as in a regular BO, insert left needle into first (beaded) st on right needle and pull it over second st, and off needle. (Arachnophilia, Hoopla)

Pf&b: purl into the front and back of next st.

PfKb: purl into the front, then knit into the back of next st.

pKso: pass knit stitch over – as in regular BO, insert left needle into first st on right needle and pull it over second st, and off needle. (Arachnophilia, Hoopla)

pm: place marker.

Ptbl: insert right needle purlwise through back loop of next st on left needle, and purl.

Purlwise CO: place slip knot on left needle; * insert right needle purlwise into slip knot and purl one st. Without twisting, place this stitch on left needle. Rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle, including the slip knot.

Purlwise Cable CO: place slip knot on left needle; insert right needle purlwise into slip knot and purl one st. Without twisting, place this stitch on left needle. * With yarn in front, insert right needle from back to front between first and second st on left needle, purl one st, and place on left needle without twisting; rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle, including the slip knot.

Purlwise Cable CO (from already existing st): * with yarn in front, insert right needle from back to front between first and second st on left needle, purl one st, and place on left needle without twisting; rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle.

P1b: purl into the st below the next st on left needle; pull yarn through, allowing st on left needle to drop down and form a double loop in front of the new stitch.

P2tog: insert needle into the fronts of next 2 st and purl them together as one.

P2togtbl: insert needle purlwise into the back loops of next 2 st and purl them together as one.

P3tog: insert needle into the fronts of next 3 st and purl them together as one.

Raindrop stitch: knit into the st below the st on left needle and place it on left needle without twisting and without dropping original st. Knit the new st, then knit the original st; pass new st over original st on right needle.

RLI: right lifted increase – insert right needle tip from back to front into st below the next stitch on left needle; place this st on left needle and knit.RLI-P: right lifted increase, purl – insert right needle tip from back to front into st below the next stitch on left needle; place this st on left needle and purl.

RP: right pleat – (worked over x st) – place next y st on dpn 1, then following y st on dpn 2; with dpn 1 held in back, fold dpn 2 counter-clockwise in front with WS facing, then hold both dpns behind left needle: K3tog (1 st from 1st dpn, 1 st from 2nd dpn and 1 st from left needle) y times.

RS: right side of work.

SKP: slip next st knitwise, knit next st, then pass slipped stitch over knit stitch.

S2KP: centered double decrease, knit side – slip the next 2 st on left needle together as if to knit; knit the next st, then with left needle pass 2 slipped st over the knit st.

S2PP: double decrease, purl side – with yarn in front, insert right needle purlwise through back loop of next 2 st and slip them together as 1 to right needle. Purl the next st, then with left needle pass 2 slipped st over the purled st. See video tutorial.

SK2P: slip next st knitwise, knit the following two st together, pass slipped st over the K2tog.

sl1: slip 1 st purlwise – on RS slip with yarn in back; on WS slip with yarn in front.

sl1wyb: slip next st purlwise with working yarn in back.

sl2wyb: slip next 2 st purlwise with working yarn in back.

sl1wyf: slip next st purlwise with working yarn in front.

sl2wyf: slip next 2 st purlwise with working yarn in front.

sl1K2togpsso – see SK2P.

SPP (or sl1Ppsso): slip next st purlwise with yarn in front, purl next st, then pass slipped st over purl st.

sl2K1p2sso: centered double decrease, see S2KP.

S2K2P (or sl2K2togP2SSO): centered triple decrease – slip the next 2 st on the left needle together as if to knit; K2tog, then pass the 2 slipped st over this stitch.

S2PP (or sl2P1p2sso): double decrease, purl side – see S2PP.

sl2belowK1p2sso: double decrease, knit column – slip the next st below the next st on left needle as if to knit, slip the next st on left needle as if to knit; knit the next st, then with left needle pass 2 slipped st over the knit st. (Red Sky)

sl2P1p2sso: double decrease, purl column – wyb slip the next 2 st on left needle as if to knit; bring yarn to front and purl the next st, then with left needle pass 2 slipped st over the purl st. (Red Sky)

sm: slip marker.

SR: short row(s).

SSK: slip, slip, knit – slip the next two st separately as if to knit, insert left needle through front of both st, and knit them together as one.

SSK: slip, slip, knit FOR APPLIED I-CORD – slip first st knitwise, slip next st purlwise, insert left needle into front of both st, and knit them together as one through the back loop.

SSSK: slip, slip, slip, knit – slip the next three st separately as if to knit, insert left needle through front of all st, and knit them together as one.

SSP: slip, slip, purl – slip the next 2 st separately as if to knit, slip these 2 st back to left needle, and purl them together as one through the back loop.

SSSP: slip, slip, slip, purl – slip the next 3 st separately as if to knit, slip these 3 st back to left needle, and purl them together as one through the back loop.

Stretchy bind off: K2, * insert left needle from left to right into front of 2 st just knit and K2tog, K1, rep from * until one st remains; cut yarn and pull tail through last st.

st: stitch(es).

Tubular CO: There are many ways to work a tubular cast on; see my video tutorial for the provisional tail tubular method. To use this method for a pattern, make a slip knot using both the main yarn and the scrap yarn, and place on right needle. Hold scrap yarn over left thumb and main yarn over left index finger, making a V-shape with the yarns. Step 1: bring needle in front of scrap yarn and up through middle of V, then over main yarn to back, then under both yarns to front again. Step 2: bring needle behind main yarn and up through middle of V. Repeat steps 1 & 2, x times total, to CO 2x st. Turn work.

Tuck: with right needle, pick up st on WS, x rows below next st on left needle. Place st on left needle knitwise, and K2tog with next st. Alternatively, all stitches may be picked up at one time with a DPN, held behind left needle, and knit together with next stitch on left needle one by one. See photo tutorial in pattern, or Tuck video tutorial.

Twin&turn (knit): with right needle, knit into stitch directly below turning stitch on left needle. Place this st on left needle without twisting, turn. Work the twinned st as one st on next row.

Twin&turn (purl): with yarn in front, slip turning stitch purlwise to right needle, then insert left needle from back to front into purl bump of stitch below slipped stitch and place on left needle. Purl, creating a twin to the slipped stitch and slip both twin and st to left needle without twisting; turn. Work the twinned st as one st on next row.

twisted purlwise cast on: * insert right needle purlwise into first st on left needle; draw a loop of yarn through and place on left needle. Rep from * until total number of required CO st are on left needle.

Vertical plaid: with contrast yarn held on WS and beginning at top of purl column, insert crochet hook from RS into first st of purl column, and pull up a loop of yarn from underneath. * Leaving loop on hook, insert hook from RS into next st of purl column and pull up a loop from underneath, pull this second loop through first loop, rep from * to last purl st of column, cut yarn and pull tail through last loop. Insert hook through last loop from WS and pull yarn tail to WS. Maintain even tension, pulling on working yarn as needed to match gauge of knitted fabric. WS: wrong side of work.

w&t (knit side): wrap and turn stitch – slip st purlwise to right needle; move yarn to front, slip st back to left needle, turn work, move yarn to front. Work the wrapped stitch together with its wrap on next row.

w&t (purl side): wrap and turn stitch – slip st purlwise to right needle; move yarn to back, slip st back to left needle, turn work, move yarn to back. Work the wrapped stitch together with its wrap on next row.

wyf: with working yarn in front.

wyb: with working yarn in back.

yf: move yarn to front.

yb: move yarn to back.

YO: yarnover.

3-needle Bind off: holding needles parallel with one behind the other and RS facing together, [insert spare needle knitwise into first st on front needle, then first st on back needle, and knit them together as one]. * Repeat [ ] for next st on front and back needles, then pass first st on spare needle over second st on spare needle, as in regular BO, rep from * until one st remains; cut yarn and pull tail through last st

6/6 LC: slip next 6 st to cable needle and hold at front of work, [K1, P1] thrice, then [K1, P1] thrice from cable needle.

6/6 RC: slip next 6 st to cable needle and hold at back of work, [K1, P1] thrice, then [K1, P1] thrice from cable needle.

1/1 RT: right twist – knit next 2 st together and leave them on left needle, insert right needle from front to back into first st and knit it again, then slip both st off needle.

1/1 LT: left twist – holding right needle behind st, skip first st and knit second st on left needle tbl leaving it on left needle, insert right needle into back of both first & second st and K2tog tbl, then slip both st off needle.
